Volunteer Job Descriptions

GARDEN MARKET: Assist with receiving produce and goods, collecting money, and opening and closing market. 

SECRETARY - OFFICE CLERK: Answer phone and refer call to appropriate staff person. Make calls to board members about meeting times and dates. Greet clients, find out what they need, and pull file before calling staff person. Use computer for correspondence and reports. Assist with other programs such as Christmas, layette, and food distribution.

THRIFT STORE: Assist with daily operation of store. Should be able to display clothing, household items, and furniture; sort items into appropriate categories as they come in and put in proper place; help customers find what is available and locate price lists. Some light housekeeping also is needed at times. May assist with other programs, such as the Christmas program, pricing toys, taking toy sale applications, and selling toys.

MAINTENANCE: Weeding around the buildings, cleaning up trash, and keeping the areas clean and neat. Also may assist with the upkeep of the buildings, including light cleaning, painting, and repair. Assist with cleaning up the vehicles and keeping their gas tanks full and ready to go at all times.

FOOD PROGRAM: Help with sorting and arranging food pantry and move food from the pantry to the office as we make up food baskets. Also at times will help with picking up food around the county and, occasionally, out of county.

GIFT ITEM SALES: Display and sell Heart and Hand gift items, such as t-shirts, hats, puzzles, etc., at various home repair work team sites during summer months and at other designated off-site locations throughout the year.

LAYETTE: Assemble layettes with appropriate items for boys or girls, help organize layette storage area, and put together a “needs” list.

KITS: Assemble health kits and cleaning kits to distribute with food baskets. Once a year school kits also are assembled for distribution to children in the county.

DRIVERS: Help with collecting, sorting, and transporting materials for housing, clothing, and food programs; transport recycling materials to appropriate recycling facility; pickup furniture and appliances locally, and occasionally, with help, make some pickups out of county and out of state. Volunteers must be over 25 years old to drive our trucks, but younger volunteers may assist.

SERVICE WORKER: Work on various home repair projects, doing light construction type activities, such as porch repairs, water lines, roofing, painting, shower installation, and general maintenance.

PHONE CALLS: Place calls to set up Committee meetings and remind Board Members of regular monthly meetings. This can be done from your home.

NEWSPAPER ADS & ARTICLES: Write interesting articles about ministry events and programs for the newspaper. Compose and layout ads for the Thrift Store and other programs.

INTERNET WEB MASTER: Maintain our website, updating program, thrift store, and other information.

PHOTOGRAPHER: Use our video and digital cameras to take pictures of programs and people in action.

NEWSLETTER: Use computer and/or writing skills to help with newsletter layout and content.

RECYCLE: Pick up items for recycling from office and Thrift Store on a regular schedule and take it to recycling centers.

WEEKEND SECURITY: Bring in items left in Thrift Store doorways and on the office porch.

ADOPT A HIGHWAY: Help with trash pickup along Rt. 119 twice a year. This includes going out with a group from the office and takes about two hours, depending on number of volunteers.
